Offering to take a client out for lunch today, he quickly suggested Mercatino, merely minutes from his office and just said "I think you will like this".
The Testa's (husband/wife owner) ease at making you feel at home from the moment you walk in the door is apparent immediately.
Picture the industrial parkland that is north of Hwy 7 east of Bathurst, a nondescript unit, and walking into a surprisingly small, but cozy Italian restaurant, stone pizza oven and all. Along the wall above the oven, daily specials that all sounded enticing. What a little surprise!
At the table today, the snails and spicy veg soup of the day were had for appetizers, followed by the grilled calamari salad special and a marg. pizza topped with arugula, parm prosc. and shaved regg - finished with a well balanced balsamic dressing to top it all off.
Everything was quite good, the snails the star of the show - perfectly executed with a tasty herb/shallot/lemon butter (the lemon component in the sauce being the key). The pizza was good as well (as well as one can do sans a wood oven!)
Lastly their Tiramisu I will now put up as near competition with my everlasting #1 in the city, which was the OLD, Banfi (when Frank owned it). Flavor was bang on, to improve, I would have wished for the cookies to have retained more of their original structure vs a more 'mushed' texture, but it was excellent!
A great option for the area, too bad for locals they are only open for dinner once a month!
