Great Eats in/near Atlanta

Hi,

Just returned from a quick trip to the area and found three spots about which I must comment.

First is on Memorial Drive SE and called Home Grown. (http://www.homegrownga.com/)

A fun, funky vibe. Great southern breakfast treats!
Especially enjoyed that a local artist was hanging a show as we were having late breakfast. When in Atlanta again, we will definitely return to try other items from this menu!

We tried a great dish featuring pimento and cheese grilled on Texas toast with bacon and fried green tomatoes. A kind of white trash BLT--delicious every bite!
Also wonderful is their chicken biscuit with sausage gravy. Salty/peppery chicken breast strips (I just can't call them tenders)

Can't leave without pie! The Lemon Icebox brought back memories of my Mother's best cooking before she aged and started taking "shortcuts"

The wait staff was friendly and fun. Opening line: If you're looking' for a place with great food, you found us. If you want really healthy food, maybe not! Fair warning and love the truth in advertising.

Second is just West on Memorial: Ria's Bluebird (http://riasbluebird.com/)

(Across from Oakland Cemetery and worth a visit if for only Margaret Mitchell, Bobby Jones and Maynard Jackson grave sites. (http://www.oaklandcemetery.com/)

Equally funky vibe as Home Grown and a great setting.

Huevos as good as I ever ate. The pinto bean's very flavorful, great salsa verde and all served over three probably homemade tortillas. The coffee was also delicious.

Then who would imagine great food in the shadow of Atlanta Airport?!

In very nearby College Park is a wonderfully restored feed store, now called: The Feed Store
(http://www.thefeedstorerestaurant.com/)

We had their Wedge Salad (with a topping they called Southern Trail Mix) A treat!
Panzanella -The Lemon Vinaigarette is to kill for.
Fried Calamari--Very nice with a honey and candied ginger topping
Their Beef Short Rib (fork tender and like velvet) with a tremendous White Sweet Potato Gratin--Could be a meal in itself as some people treat Mac and Cheese!

The Peach Fried Pies can't equal my Aunt Lottie's but she didn't serve her's with Sweet Tea Sorbet!

What a great dish!

Service was cheerful and eager and helpful to each other.

One BIG complaint. If you are charging for food and drink at these price points and the drinks and food were well worth it, it is more than TACKY to charge for the ice in a Jack Daniels!

I've been hit with fees for many odd things in my 62 years but that will keep me from returning to The Feed Store, even though I loved the food.

It speaks to something pretty inhospitable... and that is not the price of ice.

Final comment: I'm not really accustomed to traffic in Atlanta but learned, thanks to the wait staff at Home Grown that Boulevard/Monroe/Piedmont is a wonderful alternative to using I85/75 to go to and from Buckhead. What a nice surprise!

Best Regards,
Ron Carter
