The Great Brooklyn Jerk-Off (results)

Beth Pizio | Oct 22, 2001 02:17 PM

Twenty intrepid hounds gathered on Friday, October 19th at Jen Kalb's beautiful home in Prospect Heights to sample jerk chicken made by 14 different places.

In attendance were: Jen & Jim Kalb, me, Peter (my husband), June Becco, Paul Lukas, Judy Hoffman, Jenn Smith, Gary Cheong, Helen, Karen, Kat Kinsman, Alison, Ben, MK, Lauren, Mark Richman, Alan Emdin, Annie Robbins and Miles Rose.

While it wasn't a totally blind tasting, most people only knew the identity of the jerk they had brought. (And the results were such a landslide that it's pretty clear people weren't prejudiced against their own anyway.) We labeled all the offerings with letters, sealed the names of the places in envelopes and ate. And ate. And ate.

And then we voted by secret ballot for our top three places. Each first place vote was worth 3 points, each second place vote was worth 2 points and each third place vote was worth 1 point. (Just for the record, not everyone voted.) Tied places are listed alphabetically. And the results were (drum roll, please):

Some notes, if you've made it this far:

All of the jerk was actually good. To look at this list, you'd think that places that only got one vote must suck, but that wasn't the case. It's just that there was an incredible amount of great jerk on Jen's table, so in comparison very, very good jerk didn't stand a chance. And in all honesty, Nuff Niceness did not get a fair shake. MK arrived with it very late, after all the tasting was done and most people's minds were made up.

Two other details. I was going to get jerk from Jamaican Soldiers (mentioned, I think, in a Voice article), but they seem to have gone out of business. And Badoo, which I asked about on the boards last week after hearing from Paul that their number was disconnected, is in fact still in business at 5422 Church Ave in Brooklyn. Their new number is (718)498-7944. Why they changed their phone number and didn't ask for a recording mentioning the new number is beyond me. Their loss because they weren't included as a result.

Thanks again to Jen for opening her home to us and providing lots of extras, June for bringing veggies and dip (to cool our mouths between bites), Jenn for bringing Red Stripe and Alan for bringing some really great wine. And thanks to everyone who brought jerk.

The special intrepidness award goes to Miles, though. He contacted me on the day of and asked for a suggestion for a place. I'd gone through all the likely suspects and was left with a vague tip (from these boards) about a place on Flatbush a few blocks from Brooklyn College. Miles found it and it ended up placing second (Jamaica Inn). Way to go, Miles!
