Grating onions (without bawling your eyes out...)

The topic is fairly self-explanatory: I've cooked two dishes this weekend that used grated onions, and I've had to step out of the kitchen twice due to stinging eyes.

How do you avoid this happening? Any tips or tricks?

I'm using a steel box-grater on yellow onions stored in the fridge to try and minimise it...
