Graduation Dinner Suggestions - Nob Hill?

KathySK | May 5, 200603:36 PM

Hi Chowhounds,

Once again I'm throwing myself on your collective mercy.

I'm graduating (finally) on Sunday, May 21. The ceremony is going to be at 1111 California St. (between Jones and Taylor, closer to Taylor according to google maps).

I need a place for an early dinner (5:30 or 6 PM maybe) for 11 or 12 people afterwards.

1. Obviously needs to be able to accomodate a party of 12ish.
2. Preferably not break the bank - I don't think this is the time for Fleur de Lys (even though located in the right area!) I think in the neighborhood of 30/person not including alcohol would be about right.
3. I am cursed with a family of close-minded eaters (I don't know how I sprang from them). At least two will veto anyplace that serves sushi, another would not be happy with Chinese food but might give in under pressure. Another refuses steakhouses. One is doing some sort of diet where all she wants is grilled fish or chicken, no sauce (I'm sure most places would be able to accomodate that somehow).

Safest bets are probably good American or Italian food. I'm not a fan of "red sauce Italian" but I'm more than happy if you have any suggestions for better Italian restaurants that could accomodate the group size.

I know there was a previous thread for someone's daughter graduating in the same place like a week before me, but I didn't see anything in that thread that would work for my group.

TIA for any ideas you might have!
