Good Sushi at Bay/Dundas: Think Cafe Michi Chirashi...

shekamoo | May 14, 201511:59 AM

I heard that one of the two itamaes at Cafe Michi had moved to Bay/Dundas i.e. 10 minutes from work...

Went for lunch, had Chef's Chirashi and Chef's Sushi Lunch, both a decent value at $28. The chirashi reminded me more than any downtown chirashi of the venerable cafe au lait chirashi at Cafe Michi (although not as good: the cafe au lait on a good day had an AMAZING fish selection supplemented by a good variety of vegetable fillings on and inside the rice bedding. this chirashi came with decent fish and the rice bedding was the right texture but did not have all the trimmings).

My friend said his nigiri set was also very good, with the usual complaints about deteriorating shari temperature when being served as 10 pieces in a single serving.

Disconcertingly cavernous space for a sushi joint (I think something like 100 covers), but the sushi bar where we were seated was nice and close enough to the action, although a little "cold".

There were two chefs making sushi at the bar but we did not see the Cafe Michi itamae among them, so we asked the staff whether he is actually here and they confirmed that. we apparently just missed him for that lunch.

P.S. I am not a food pic person and the quality of these pics leaves something to be desired but I assumed it would help people get a sense of what they are looking at, so to speak...
