Anybody make a good flank steak?

On another board I mentioned my friend J.D.'s flank steak, a big treat he would sometimes make back in our UMR days, and the next day I was at the meat counter and there, staring back at me, was a beautiful flank steak. I had to buy it.
It wasn't until I got home that I remembered that I make terrible flank steak. It seemed like J.D. just skillet-broiled his and it was wonderful, but when I do that I get a curled-up piece of leather. I've tried marinating/spice rubbing/fast sear/slow cook...it just never seems to come out well.
Anybody make a nice flank steak? I need some suggestions...
