Growing up, the holidays were a minefield of vile, plasticky supermarket candied fruits. Even with my crazy sweet tooth, I was never able to bring myself to eat my mother's fruitcake (which everyone else inexplicably loved -- must have been all the brandy...). I'm going to do a little holiday baking with her this year, and would love to be able to make a version of her fruitcake that I might actually eat. And maybe if even I like it, everyone else will love it even more. I don't know if it's that I just don't like candied fruits, or whether I haven't had good ones.
Anyone care to facilitate a warm fuzzy family holiday moment with reccomendations for sources of tasty candied fruits -- or is this a lost cause?
