Good breakfast in an unexpected place

Diner4Life | Feb 17, 2012 07:14 AM

I recently had breakfast at Huey's Diner located just outside of the Jax Brewery on Decatur. My wife and I stopped in after seeing their sign advertising breakfast served 24 hours a day. The staff was very welcoming and showed us to a table in their smallish dining room. The menu is extensive, but we focused on the breakfast offerings.
My wife decided on the Cajun Omelet and I ordered a short stack of pancakes. We both had coffee and juice. The waitress said the coffee was a locally roasted brand called NO Roast. It was freshly brewed and very good. Service was pretty fast - we received our food in less than 10 minutes. The omelet was huge and filled with crawfish tails, andouille sausage, and green peppers. It was served with grits and toast. The grits were surprisingly flavorful. I had the instant version a couple of times and always thought they were bland. The pancakes were without a doubt the best pancakes I've ever had. They had an incredible sweet richness to them that made syrup and butter almost unecessay. Almost.
We finished every bite. Our waitress, Sherry, couldn't have been nicer. She told us about some lunch and dinner specials that the restaurant was running and invited us back with a 10% off card. Unfortunately, we didn't make it back to try their other offerings. In the end breakfast cost us about $23 for two with coffee, juice, and two entrees. Not bad for the French Quarter. We'll be back!
