Gaudir... Spanish Monday night pop up in East Harlem

erica | Jun 5, 201811:08 AM

I'd never been to a pop up restaurant before two friends suggested we visit last night.

Just wanted to give a brief comment on the place, located in the Mountain Bird space on East 110th Street, very convenient to bus and subway. Small dining space with tables both indoors and on outdoor terrace. Welcoming staff, happy to discuss food. Menu of Spanish highlights fromv arious regions, from a few paellas to tortilla, to jamon Ibérico to croquetas to rabo de toro. All we sampled was very good to excellent. Also important: The restaurant was QUIET enough to hear the four of us talk without raising voices!

While the croquetas might have been not quite up to the level of my current "best in show," from Fermín in Oviedo (partner loves these so we order them in almost every restaurant in Spain that we visit) they were pretty terrific--half serrano and half chorizo, meltingly creamy inside and perfect fry technique. Consider those a "must try," and ditto the txipirones (squid). Tasted the gambas al ajillo--first rate; same with the charred squid served atop a bed of favas and peas (?) with drizzle of squid ink and patatas a la Brava. Dining partner loved the beef tartar and we all liked the pulpo a la plancha.

Two of us shared a traditional paella a la montaña, with pork ribs, chorizo, and chicken and peas, maybe favas as well (I took no notes sorry).

We were too full to sample any of the desserts but next time will try the flourless pastel de chocolate.

Great place, deserves to be better known. We hope to return soon, on another Monday night. Believe they also do catering. Close your eyes and don't listen to the languages spoken around you and you can imagine for a minute that you in a little sit-down restaurant east of Retiro Park. And that's a great thing!
