A week ago Saturday after the World of Pinot Noir wine tasting in Shell Beach a group of us (6 couples) had dinner here in the Sycamore Resort. We chose this place on my recommendation based on a great meal that my wife and I had enjoyed there about a year ago and the desire of two in our party from nearby Cambria who had been wanting to try it.
We were seated at 7:30 and discovered they were already out of a couple of the main entrees. I was really psyched up for the Ahi Poke appetizer I had noticed on their seasonal offerings published in the coastal Menus magazine but was told it had been removed from the menu.
I chose the Rack of Lamb for dinner and ordered a bottle of wine that they were also out of but settled for the Robt. Hall Rhone du Robles ($30) which was quite nice. The lamb was well prepared and tasty.
Most of the others in our party didn't fare so well, those ordering the NY steak said they were just OK. The reports on the Sea Bass ranged from OK to inedible (nowhere near fresh).
The topper of the evening was the loss of one of our party's order for the fish. Even after it was brought to their attention it didn't arrive until after everyone else had finished and they were taking dessert orders. At one point they even asked if he still wanted it.
One other very strange thing, they told us that they had let their Executive Chef (Ralph Fabula) go, emphasizing the point that *they* had let him go.
Advice to anyone considering trying GofA, call first and see if they have at least hired another chef, if not I'd look elsewhere.
