Fun but good "cocktail wine" for spa weekend?

A friend and I are having a 'girls weekend' away without the husbands and kids, and I want to bring a few bottles of wine. I have recently gotten into wine, and enjoy trying different wines, learning about them. And I"m not afraid of trying a disappointing bottle, as I learn as much from those as from really good bottles.

So far, I've fallen in love with wines from the Southern Rhone, and Oregon Pinot Noirs. I didn't love the California Pinots I've tasted, and I've just started dipping my toes into Burgundy.

However, my friend is not really "into" wine, though she likes to drink it. She likes the box wines, which I'm afraid I have outgrown.

Can you recommend a few wines (preferably red) that would be fun, interesting for me, but approachable enough for her? And preferably under $20 retail? I'm thinking 3 bottles will do it for the weekend.

Thanks.
