Fudge - Butter Yes or No?

I recall when I last made fudge I used butter in the recipe. When I looked at a few recipes I didn't see it in my collection. Online I did find a few that call for 1/2 stick for each lb of chocolate. What is the difference between using it and not? Last time it came out great. Thanks.
