Why does my frozen milk sometimes defrost perfectly, and sometimes with clumps?

I freeze milk frequently (usually 1 or 2% pasteurized milk), and have noticed that sometimes it defrosts and is identical in texture to fresh milk; and sometimes it separates and even when shaken remains clumpy. I am unaware of any difference in freezing technique.

So what gives? If anyone know why, and how to prevent this separation, I would be thrilled to know. Thanks!
