French Laundry - I can't believe I'm asking this

Is it worth it?

I'm an NYC hound who will be in SFO in December and January. I want to take my wife to FL and have plans to bend over backwards to get in. It seems like lunch might be a better option, but I digress.

I have no doubt that it will be an over-the-top experience, but for every "holy god, run over your grandmother to get there" post, there's someone who says "it's awesome, but still not really worth all the hype and the price."

a number of people have noted the ritz as a great alternative. perhaps we should consider that instead?

anyway, i don't mean to get into another lengthy debate of 'is it or isn't it', but more trying to get a handle on the entire experience. maybe i should hit the ritz and/or chez panisse and save my keller $$ for per se here in new york? or is the FL really the holy grail?

any thoughts would be most appreciated!
