Franklin's Brewpub and Restaurant in Hyattsville

Went to Franklin's in Hyattsville Saturday night and here are some impressions: the place is noisy but not too; liked the liveliness and mixture of families, people on dates, groups of friends, etc...; amazingly enough, the beers that we tried (Stout which didn't have enough head, their IPA, Amber Ale, and Oktoberfest) weren't all that great. The IPA and the Stout stood out as having the best flavor and robustness. The others seemed rather weak; the portobello white pizza was great with plenty of gooey cheese and nice crust. Warning: the portions are huge and that pizza was good to share in my threesome. Try the pork barbecue cooked nice and moist with crust here and there. My friend and I had the Carolina which was nice and vinegary with zingy red pepper flakes. You must try the side of garlic mashed potatoes which have great, sauteed garlic cloves mixed in. Better even than my fat french fries which were at least not limp and greasy. My husband had the Shepherd's Pie which had nice mashed potatoes on top but should have been browned. What was underneath tasted good but too tomatoey to be considered authentic Shepherd's Pie and could have fed two 'Skins linebackers; The coffee was nice. The service was very friendly (ask for Valerie - she is very nice and accomodating) but was slow maybe accounting for the fact that it was a busy Saturday night. Try it!
