I'm traveling to Pienza (in Tuscany) this June for a wedding, and I'm planning to rent a car afterward to explore some of the countryside. I'm tentatively thinking of heading into Umbria, mainly because I've never been there. But I'm open to alternative suggestions. Mainly I want to get a little off the beaten path. Le Marche is also an intriguing possibility.
I plan to let my stomach do the guiding, and was hoping you good folks could make some recommendations. Some things I'm interested in:
* Restaurants. Affordable and regional preferred, not that these are hard to find in Italy.
* Wineries. My girlfriend is keen to visit some vineyards. Any favorites?
* Agroturismo. I like the idea of being cooked for in someone's home. I like the idea of a cooking class even better, if it can be arranged.
* Cheese. I have a deep, deep weakness for cheese. Know of any artisanal cheesemakers hidden away in any particularly picturesque spots?
