Florida tomato ban

Karl S. | Dec 21, 2004 08:48 AM

As many hounds may have read, the Florida Tomato Committee (a trade group) is banning shipments of UglyRipe tomatoes (grown by one group of producers)that don't meet the trade standards for roundness and appearance. Because the committee does not evaluate tomatoes for taste, as it considers taste to subjective to evaluate, it enforces strict appearance standards regardless of the the fact that an ugly tomato is often the best tasting. This is a kind of issue near and dear to many hounds, I am sure.

Today's article in the NY Times (free registration required to read; consider using the BugMeNot.com method if you prefer):

If you wish to contact the Florida Trade Committee yourself to express your opinions, I provided a link below.
