Some new finds at Deerfield, in Monterey Park, etc

Here are some new things I've found this weekend -just for general interest.

1.Went back to Deerfield Garden in Monterey Park. Dumplings were good, - simple northern boiled jiaozi, no xiaolongbao "soup dumplings" here. Just Beijing style. New thing - lotus root salad in sweet osmanthus sauce - Gui Hua Ou Pian. This is an appetizer of sliced blanched lotus root with bits of minced fresh ginger and a sauce infused with osmanthus flower (syrup). It's sweet and refreshing. I also remember this as an Imperial Kitchen snack, rather than Street food.

2. Across the way in the same mall is a place called Little Sheep - Chinese name, Xiao Fei Yang - (little fat sheep). The sign says it specializes in Inner Mongolian hot pot (nei Menggu Huo Guo). I don't know how this differs from the "rinsed" mutton -Shuan Yang Rou- at Deerfield or Homestyle restaurant. Looked interesting and quite elegant inside. A place for me or someone else to explore. Grand opening signs up.

3. Have been looking for the locally made industrial 'candy bar' confection called "Cup-o-Gold". Found it today at Smart $ Final. Problem, minimum is box of 24. Plus side - they are amazingly good. They are a cup like a reese's but much bigger, inside the milk chocolate is a filling, somewhat creamy, reminiscent of scooter-pie marshmallow. Plus fresh tasting coconut and almond. And it's made by one of the last local candy factories here. I'm very happy. Link to manufacturer below.
