Excellent Cookie Alert @ Brooklyn's Betty

funkymonkey | Jun 3, 200711:11 AM

I was walking by Betty (Atlantic Ave, between Nevins and Bond) and couldn't resist the gorgeous, glamorous wedding cakes on display in the window. I told myself that I wouldn't buy anything, I'd just ogle the brightly colored, perfectly decorated tarts and petit fours and cakes and continue on my merry way, not a calorie heavier.

Everything in this place looks like it belongs in a photo shoot for a Martha Stewart Living bridal shower. Normally, I'm a down home baked goods kind of girl, from the ooey, gooey, sticky school of dessert. Betty obviously values presentation, so I figured, in the name of Chowhound research, I should find out whether their style was packin' substance.

I bough a quarter pound of their delicate, little cookies: almond lace sandwiching bittersweet chocolate, lemon shortbread hearts, Belgian butter cookies, and peanut butter sesame cookies. They're all yummy, in the way that anything loaded with good quality butter is going to be, but only the peanut-butter sesame will inspire a return visit (if I lived around the corner, I might feel differently, but there are enough bakeries in my park slope 'hood to keep me happy.)

The peanut-butter sesame cookies are flat little discs with a vague peanut-ness, and lots of wonderful sesame flavor from the ton of sesame seeds, both black and white, crammed into each ethereally crumbly biscuit. They're like a refined version of that supersweet sesame honey candy you sometimes see in middle eastern shops. These, fortunately, aren't too sweet and would be just amazing with a cup of mint tea and a good book. It's a wonderful combination of flavors, executed particularly well.

I'm a sucker for a good bowl of Chinese peanut/sesame noodles, so maybe this is a combination that just appeals to me in particular, but they're a tasty little find, in case you happen to have a good book and a mug of mint tea looking for a friend. Or you're planning a bridal shower.
