We went to the Epicurean recently. Also went when it was Vin Santo. An alternative to S. Springs/Albany. Like Chez Mike and Grappa '72, location is odd (in a mall).

Wine mark-up was reasonable.

They served warm bread and olive oil/balsamic vinegar.

We started with the butternut squash bisque and seared foie gras. We appreciated that you didn't have to order everything from the "Discover France" A la carte menu which includes Dordogne - Perigord - Gascony in December/January. SO had baked oysters with sauteed green and spicy pastis sabayon. I had a taste. Didn't seem that spicy to me. Very good.

I had the pan seared duck breast with gratin Dauphinois and asparagus (thick, crisp-tender) with rasberry demi-glace sauce. My dish was garnished with gorgeous fresh rasberries. The sauce was excellent. The cut of duck was good. Enough for two. The best duck I've ever had was at Ciano, The Modern Dining Room (like filet mignon, I could cut it with a butter knife and it almost melted in my mouth) and what we make at home.

SO had the Prince Edward Island mussels with garlic, shallots and curried cream. The cream sauce was delicious and subtle. Yukon gold fries. I tasted the fries and they were good.

Epicurean has a Gourmet Shoppe:

We had an artisanal cheese course. We left the selection of cheeses up to our server. Both cheeses were delicious. The presentation was beautiful.

We also had espresso.

Everything was very fresh. The foie gras and sauces were the highlight for me. Very French (the chefs are from Quebec and Central France) - a niche in the Capital District. Overall a very good experience. We will go back.
