I chanced upon Enak whilst looking for a good "local" restaurant for lunch in downtown Kuala Lumpur last week.
It's located in Starhill Gallery, that sumptious upscale mall located in the heart of KL's Golden Triangle. Starhill's filled with practically a phalanx of top restaurants from around the region: Jim Thompson's Thai restaurant from Bangkok; Pak Loh Chiuchow restaurant and Luk Yu Teahouse/restaurant from Hong Kong; Gonbei (a KL clone of Tokyo's Gonpachi); the choice was mind-boggling.
Anyway, our choice of Enak was the right one. The food was absolutely delicious. We ordered:
Pegedil - Malay-style potato croquettes, filled with chicken, fish & shallots. It's served with a spicy-sweet chilli dip which enhanced the overall flavors;
Gado-gado - a cold Malay salad of crunchy raw vegetables, fried tofu cubes & tempe (an Indonesian soybean cake). It was awesome - I can eat this every day.
Rendang Daging - an aromatic dry beef curry. It's good, but I think I still preferred melt-in-your-mouth Indonesian-style beef rendang much more;
Sotong Berisi - stuffed squid. My dining companions loved it. I can't tell as I'm staying off squid whilst watching my cholesterol levels at the moment;
Otak-otak - a very scrumptious spicy, coconutty fish mousse, steamed in banana leaves.
Cendol - a Malaysian version of halo-halo shaved-ice dessert;
And a coconut custard dessert - can't remember what it's called now.
Overall, a great meal, even if the calorie count would be high with their liberal use of coconut milk, and lots of deep-frying.
The service levels can be improved, young service staff were shaky but more than make up for it by their friendliness & pleasant demeanor. It's also a plus that we could windowshop in the huge air-conditioned mall afterwards, without having to brave KL's sweltering heat & humidity outside.
