Empanadas del Parque

this is a fairly new but not brand new place on the way to the Lemon Ice King and Corona Heights Pork Store on 108th Street, closer to the LIE

Empanadas del Parque
56-27 Van Doren Street on the corner of 108th Street
tel 718 592-7288
on the card it says "Cafe Colombiano"

we were on the way to pick up our son from LaGuardia and we live in Forest Hills, so we take 108th to Astoria Blvd etc (quick back way to airport because we cannt travel on Grand Central due to commercial plates)

anyway, the tummy was rumbling, so we stopped there for what we figured would be a quick snack to go.
The empanadas are only $1 a piece and there is a wide range of fillings available. They seem to be cooked fresh to order more or less. Anyway on the way to the airport I got three to try.

Maudro y Mozzarella which is sweet plaintain & Mozz
Ham and Cheese (figuring it was a safe bet)
Shredded Beef (which was in a corn flour wrapper - although I didn't read the menu at the time I order, as I was in a hurry and was very pleasantly surprised)
On the side they give you little side containers of a very tasty green salsa - not too spicy

on the way back we got seconds and thirds of the shredded beef which had some potato and other goodies mixed in
and had the plaintain and mozzarella again too - it was really tasty.

we also tried the shredded pork and shredded chicken, neither of which did much for me other than the delicious fried corn pastry wrapper.

the best find however was the helado
for another $1 you get a small cup on a dixie stick of obviously homemade "ices". The fruit flavor was authentic and superb. It didn't seemto be dilluted at all - almost like eating a piece of sweet frozen mango yet smooth too.

It will be hard to decide next time whether to get the lemon ice king ices or empanadas del parque helado cups. I think for now I prefer the helado.
