I was more than a bit skeptical sitting down at Emilie's after they rolled out their cart. It is filled with what looks like banchan and they charge for it. Not a lot mind you, but it looks like stuff I am used to getting for free.
Boy was I wrong. I tried the fermented beets and the preserved eggplant, and they were both wonderful. The beets were surprisingly complex, and the eggplant was outrageously delicious, drenched in a rather luxurious-tasting oil. I was already having a good time.
The other item I ordered was a grilled sweet potato with a pepian mole, sprinkled with seeds and some cotijo. It was also very delicious, with a nice char that combined well with the tangy sauce and crunch from the seeds. I knew I was in the hands of an excellent kitchen.
That was my entire meal, and it was a cheap thrill by DC standards.
