Eleven Madison Park - R-Week (Long-ish Review)

I just got back from lunch at Eleven Madison Park (Rest-week prix fixe of $24.07.) The service, of course, was impeccable as is expected at all of Danny Meyer's places.

My companion and I were seated within 30 seconds of her walking in. We had an excellent banquette table with a beautiful view of the room for both of us.

I think the best part of the menu was the amount of choice. So often I have been out to places for R-week and there have been extremely few options. The menu included at least 5 different choices for each course.

I chose a white gazpacho with tiger prawn for my first course. The gazpacho was creamy smooth, with a flavored oil (possibly paprika?) swirled into it. The prawn was cooked perfectly so that the consistency never even approached rubbery. My friend had a grilled watermelon and tomato salad served with basil and aged balsamic vinegar that she declared "amazing."

We both had the salmon for our second course, which was probably the best-cooked salmon I have ever had in my life. It was crusted with horseradish and served on top of a bed of diced cucumber and potato salad with dill, and surrounded by what I think I remember as a Riesling foam. The salmon itself was extremely delicate, served medium-rare, and tasted wonderfully salmon-y without tasting overly fishy. (I don't think that salmon-y is a word, but too bad, because I am in a food coma.)

(As a side note, they were offering 4 different bottles of wine with lunch at $24.07 each - most likely a great deal, but we did not participate because we both had to get back to work.)

For dessert, I had what was billed as a salty caramel something with a caramel-mocha ice cream. It was amazing - the salt was a surprisingly great addition to the rich chocolate and caramel tart and the ice cream was wonderfully rich. My friend had the "warm blueberries" which were served with a pecan financier and cornbread ice cream. The ice cream was amazingly just like cornbread and tasted perfect alongside the blueberries.

All in all, a wonderful meal - highly recommended for R-week lunch. Wish I didn't have to go back to work!
