El Tapatio #2 (Rockville Pike Location) Review

MarcDC | May 10, 2008 07:17 PM

Myself and a group of friends went to El Tapatio #2 in Rockville tonight and I just wanted to give an updated report.

Bottom Line: It's a great taqueria and I will definitely go back.

The location is kinda crappy but it's located in the shopping center after Thai Jasime (I believe that shopping center is called Walnut Hill). It's north of Shady Grove road, on the East side (same side as Thai Jasmine Bistro).

The chips they brought to the table were fantastic. They were freshly fried up tortillas and the accompanying salsa had just enough kick. Very very good start to the meal. We decided to get an order of guacamole and this too came out very fresh. It was nice and chunky but definitely needed a little bit of salt to bring out the flavors (which we added at the table).

I decided to get two goat (birria) tacos and one pork (carnitas) taco. The goat was fantastic and I highly recommend them. I was also very pleased with my carnitas taco.

One friend also got two carnitas tacos and another friend got the taco platter (comes with rice and what appeared to be refried beans). He opted for one carnitas and one chorizo taco. He said the chorizo was fantastic.

The only questionable order was the enchilada with mole sauce. Now, this was my first time trying mole sauce but I wasnt a huge fan. It tasted like it had coffee and chocolate in it, with a smokey hint to it. It was very dark and thick and I think if you're a fan of mole sauce it's probably very good... I just wasnt a huge fan.

Oh, one person also ordered a Horchata and it was delicious.

Please note: You gotta be able to speak a little bit of Spanish to get by here.... You don't need to be fluent but if you know some simple words it will go a long way in making the ordering and paying process go smoothly.

Overall, I highly recommend checking this place out if you're searching for a good taqueria in Rockville. Our bill for 4 people came to $43; very reasonable.
