El Kora y Cachanillas Lonchera in Salinas

Melanie Wong | Aug 4, 201606:46 PM     2

Spotting the El Kora y Cachahillas truck on Harkins Road by the entrance to the coolers, I grabbed a few tacos to try it out. The operator told me he's at this spot on week days from 10am to 9:30pm. The truck is associated with El Kora en Las Islas Marias in North Salinas.

Though the lettering on the truck says "Mariscos El Pollo", no seafood is offered on the menu. Pay attention to the words "El Pollo" right under that, as the chicken turned out to be the strongest of the meats I tried. Tacos are $1.50 apiece, including tax.

Carnitas turned out to be more like boiled, stringy, too lean strips of pork with no inherent flavor at all. Al pastor was even worse, mushy bits of underseasoned meat with texture that reminded me of cat food. Luckily, the chicken turned out to be pretty good, stained red from achiote marinade and juicy. Hard to believe that these came from the same kitchen. The tortillas were not sweated. The salsa was more fiery than expected and added quite a kick.
