DH and I had a great time in San Francisco and the other cities we traveled to during our recent vacation. We ate some GREAT food and found some awesome little places that we can't stop daydreaming about...and yes, we remember what we got at each place because the food was THAT good!
if you in the area of these restaurants, I greatly suggest you stop in and chow down!
House of Nan King: (Chinatown) score - A
we had the homemade steamed dumplings and mongolian beef
if we had time to go back we would have tried the grilled garlic fish and sesame chicken
Hang Ah Tea Room (Chinatown): score - A
the Dim Sum is AWESOME and cheap! We had the fried shrimp balls, steamed sticky rice with pork, steamed shrimp dumplings, and black bean short ribs. So GOOD! This was the one place we went back to twice!
Taylor's (in the Ferry Building): score - A
we stopped here for a snack mid afternoon since we skipped lunch due the lateness of breakfast. We split an order of garlic fries.... OH MY GOD, so good! Someone near us was eating the Ahi Tuna burger, it looked delicious!
Alioto's (on Fishermen's Wharf): score - D
My relatives own this place so I felt compelled to stop in...the food was nothing special at all but the prices for the food we got were outrageous. Typical tourist trap. We shared half a cracked crab and bay scallop creole dish.
Celia's Mexican Grill (I think this was in San Matteo): score - B
DH got a carne asada burrito the size of texas and I got the carna asada entry which was equally large. Huge portions, great happy hour and stiff drinks. it's a chain restaurant. Our waiter was rude and they took forever to bring our food, we found out later the waiter screwed up the order and had to redo it so it added time to us getting our food.
Sodini's Bar (North Beach): Score - A
I love this place...I go there everytime i'm in town but only for drinks. Never had the food and I heard it's just okay. But the bar is great. Shoutout to Anna the bartender...she makes great drinks and even better jokes! xoxo
In n' Out Burger: score - B
DH got a double double and I got a cheeseburger, we split fries and a shake. It was the first time DH or I ever had In N' Out Burger... he loved it, I thought it was okay. I'm not a big on fast food but i LOVED that the menu only had like 4 things on it. Hamburger, cheese burger, double double, fries and drinks...that's it. oh, and of course, the secret menu
on the way to Monterey:
The Whole Enchilada @ Moss Landing on highway 1: score - A++++
This place is AWESOME! DH got garlic prawns with a smokey chipotle sauce and eggplant, I got shrimp and corn tamale with a lime cilantro cream sauce. DH The food was killer, the drinks were great (house margarita) and it's just a total dive ... with a kewl biker bar in the back! The owner came around and asked us how our meal was and we got talking ... he gave us a tour and befriended us ... it was GREAT. We wanted to go back but didn't make it.
Papa Chevo on Cannery Row (opposite end of the aquarium) Score: A
We ate here for breakfast and both got chirizo, eggs and potato in a whole wheat wrap with homemade salsa verde. OH MY GOD, so good... great breakfast and cheap prices. a definate hidden jewel
Fishhoppers on Cannery Row: Score - C
We went here per a coworker of mine's recommendation. It looked good and they had all their specials layed out at the front door. We both wanted tuna so when we saw all the tuna specials we were excited. We sat down, ordered drinks and appetizers and when the waiter came back to take our dinner order and we both asked for tuna he informed us that they ran out of tuna early in the night. we were totally bummed and both scrambled to find something else on the menu... needless to say we both got something else, me: ceasar salad with grilled prawns and DH got seafood scampi but we weren't thrilled. it was okay... it was a bit pricey too.
Bubba Gumps on Cannery: score - A
we went here after a long day at the aquarium and just had drinks and an appetizer. We got a sampler plate that had a little bit of everything: peel and eat shrimp, hushpuppies, artichoke dip, etc. I got a pomagrante margarita that was out of this world...YUM Great view of the waterfront too!
Hula's Island Grill and Tiki Bar (on lighthouse ave): score: A+++
This was the best meall of the entire trip!!! DH got the wasabi Ahi Tuna special and I thought he was going to pass out because he was so happy, I got the grilled fish tacos and they were AWESOME!!! We also got the hawaiian halibut cerviche and ... well there are NO words to explain how good it was. The drinks were killer too... Blood Orange martini for me and mah tai for DH... FUN, FUN, FUN place...MUST GO
Cibo (near the Doubletree hotel): score - D
worste meal of the trip... my parents recommended this place a million times over so we felt compelled to go. We found out later that management changed recently and the quality of food has gone down hill quickly. DH got clams casino as an app (two of them were bad) and the filet mignon for dinner... overcooked, I got a ceasar salad as an app and it was just okay, I got the swordfish spethini and they were so overcooked they were not edible. for the money, we were bummed we wasted a night there. all we kept saying was "we should have gone back to HULA'S!
Tommy's Wok (mission and ocean): score - A
Dim Sum, we got a bunch of things and they were all really good. Simple outdoor seating and cheap prices. We got alot of food and our bill came to less then $24 for two people.
it was a very yummy vacation...can't wait to go back!
