Eating in Season: Squash Blossoms

Melanie Wong | Jul 28, 201409:17 PM     11

With this week's heat wave, summer's really here. Displays of squash blossoms color farmers markets and seasonal specials of the summer flowers are popping up on menus.

Please tell us where you've been enjoying squash blossoms.

In recent weeks, I've tried:

1. Stuffed squash blossom appetizer at Diavola in Geyserville

Sunday special, $15. Fried squash blossoms stuffed with pork belly, shrimp, ricotta and summer squash. Thick-looking but very light and crisp batter. Bed of arugula with cherry tomatoes, sweet yellow and white corn, pickled onions and tomato coulis. Perfection.

2. Yellow peach salad at Waterbar in San Francisco

$16. Chevre stuffed and deep-fried squash blossoms, yellow peaches, watercress, rosemary, white balsamic dressing.

3. Zucca pizza at A16 in San Francisco

$16. Wood-fired pizza topped with sweet as apples summer squash slices, squash blossoms, mozzarella, grana padano, garlic.

4. Stuffed squash blossoms at Zero Zero in San Francisco

$14. Soggy, greasy undercooked floury-tasting batter, grilled sweet corn relish, fried chunks of summer squash, blossoms stuffed with ricotta and mascarpone, basil, chives, espelette pepper.
