My housemate Cynsa snuck out early Saturday morning to the closest bakery, Dos Hermanos, to pick up breakfast treats..
We shared a breakfast sandwich on a delightfully chewy English muffin with bacon, cheese and an egg-like puck. And a Yucatan-style pastry called hojaldra made with layers of pastry filled with cheese, spicy chiles and ham with lots of sugar crystals. Not as puffy and flaky as others I&#39;ve tried and much more about the filling here.
But that&#39;s not all . . . what&#39;s hiding in those wrappers?
Lemon bar, coffee cake, pineapple Danish, lardon baguette, pretzel, and polcano baguette. The lemon bar base was actually closer to cake in texture, making it a more delicate pastry then expected. The coffee cake was airy and feather-light. The two baguettes had crisp but not hard crusts. When they put chiles in something, the heat is full-bore. Loved that chewy pretzel.
And here&#39;s now they looked when sliced and served to dinner guests that night.
