browsing your board i saw a recent discussion of a shawarma joint on 6th ave (village shawarma), and someone mentioned doner. i live in chicago but will be in nyc for a few weeks, and i'm dying to get my hands on *good* doner. my idea of good comes from the stands and shops i've been to in germany (primarily) and elsewhere in europe. the places i've found in chicago don't serve it in the wedge of fluffy large bread, split down the middle. instead, it's always in a pita. i'm not sure which is authentic, but in berlin turkish joints, it's served in this bread ("fladenbrot" in german). also, the meat hasn't had that fresh off the spit, oozing lovely taste i'm used to.
anyhow, i'll be staying in chelsea and am willing to walk for good chow. i would love to find a few places to indulge my craving. from my trips to nyc in the past, i know there are a lot of middle eastern/falafel joints, so i imagine i'll be in luck.
