I had lunch at Rene Pujol over the weekend, and based on favorable posts on this Board, I was looking forward to it. We ordered from the $23 prix fixe luncheon menu. My first course was garlic sausage with lentil salad, consisting of three modest slices of sausage on a portion of lentils small enough to be concealed by the sausage. The flavor was okay, but the portion was decidedly skimpy. My main course was sauteed sea scallops with arugula and herb sauce. Before ordering it, I had sought reassurance from the captain that the portion was not insubstantial. He said it was okay, but, alas, when it appeared there were five lonely half-dollar sized scallops on the perimeter of the plate with a small pile of greens in the center. My companion laughed and immediately promised to share his entree with me. From a taste standpoint, the dish was undistinguished, and from a size standpoint it was ludicrous. Dessert was supposedly a dark chocolate terrine with pistachio sauce. The portion was adequate and the taste was decent for what it was, but the chocolate neither appeared nor tasted "dark." Aside from the fact that I thought the captain had seriously misinformed me about the scallops, the service was correct, but utterly lacking in warmth or even interest. I headed out into the cold, unhappy and still hungry. Is Rene Pujol slipping, or is my experience not representative?
