After hearing many raves about this Northern Italian reataurant, we have had two disappointing meals there and won't be back. The place is large and noisy--a bit of Mama Leone's vibe, if anyone remembers. Many of the patrons seemed like regulars on close terms with the staff, which meant that others feel a bit left out. The service was not good, especially the second time, when we were told by one greeter that a table would be available in ten minutes, then, afer handing the car over to the valet, we were admonished by the maitre d' that we'd have to wait at least 45 minutes. He seemed annoyed that we had no reservation. We sat at a table in the bar for a while, then realized it was much quieter and more relaxing than the rest of the place, and took up the maitre d' on his offer that we eat our meal there. Actually getting a menu, placing our orders and getting our food was quite an endeavor. I had to get up and beg the bartender for a glass of water. The food was okay, but not inspired. I ate Northern Italian food like this in New York City twenty-five years ago, and some of these preparations are more tired than classic. The portions are very large, so I guess there's some appeal there for the type of customer who is looking for volume over quality. I just don't get this place's reputation. Maybe it's the lack of many alternatives in Portchester, or the fact that it's cheaper than the restaurants in nearby Greenwich. But there are a half dozen Italian restaurants in Stamford that put this place to shame and cost about the same--take a short ride north and have a better meal with less attitude!
