Dinner, theatre, and desert advice for an out of towner

Hi,

In mid January I will be in New York to see a musical at the St. James Theatre. I was thinking of an early dinner, followed by the show at 8:00 pm, and then followed by dessert.

I am unfamiliar with Manhattan, and would gratefully appreciate any local wisdom about where to eat and any potential logistical issues. I am looking for something where I can eat and still make it to the show on time that is memorible, upscale, and just quiet enough to have good converation with my companion. The post-musical dessert can be anywhere. I was thinking of spending between $100-$200 total for dinner and desert, though a little more won't kill me.

Thanks for the help.
