Since my post got deleted, I decided to copy and paste the recap. Hopefully it won't get deleted again!

Dinner at Sumatra

Finally, I made it to Sumatra Restaurant in Hillsboro this weekend and even better I was there with my whole family. After about 45 minutes drive from NE Portland, I was starving when I got there around 6:15 pm. Sumatra has a very nice interior. I love the color of the wall which is green and some Indonesian paintings on the wall. It made me feel like I'm back in Indonesia which is my home.

The menu is simple and affordable. You can choose:

Combinations of
One Item $6.00
Two Items $ 7.25
Served with rice

Rendang – Indonesian beef stew cooked with coconut milk
Tinoransak – Indonesian spicy pork with lemon grass, lime leaves, basil, ginger, green onion, hot pepper
Ayam Rica-rica – Chicken with hot pepper, ginger, lime leaves, lemon grass, candle nuts)
Ayam Kare – Chicken cooked with yellow curry and coconut milk
Ayam Kecap – Chicken white meat cooked with sweet soy sauce
Gado-gado – Mixed steam vegetables with peanut sauce
Acar Kuning – Mixed vegetables with tumeric, vinegar, ginger, candlenut
Kale Kare – Kale cooked with yellow curry

or you can choose their specials also. Decision decision decision. Finally, I ordered two items with Ayam Rica rica and Gado gado. My boyfriend ordered two items combination with Ayam Kecap and Gado Gado. Pretty much the rest of my family ordered variety from the menu above.

Since we all missed home, we decided to ordered some of their specials,

Sumatra Ayam Goreng – Sumatra fried chicken
Bubur Ayam – Chicken Porridge
Bihun Goreng - Fried clear noodles

Not long after we ordered, the food finally arrived. It only took about 20 minutes or less. Here is the picture of my lovely two item combinations of ayam rica rica, gado gado, and steam rice.

The ayam rica rica was delicious, especially I added some homemade chilli sauce on top of it. The gado gado was good, but I think not enough peanut sauce on it.

My mom ordered two combinations with tinoransak/spciy pork and kale kare/kale curry. The kale kare was really good and tasted like what my grandma made back at home.

The specials that we ordered was good. The ayam goreng/fried chicken was delicious and tender. The bubur ayam/chicken porridge was mediocre. It's not soft enough and it was too thick. The bihun goreng/fried clear noodles was really good. Here is a snapshot of the goodness of it.

After all that food went into my belly, I still had the craving for Es campur/ Shredded ice with mixed fruits, condensed milk, and chocolate/strawberry syrup for dessert. So I decided to ordered one and shared it with my sister. It was so yummy. I just wished they put young coconut in additional to jack fruits and jellies in that Es campur.

Our bill came, and the total for 7 people dinner was $84.00. It was a really good bargain considering we ate a lot of food and we were sooooooooo full. In my opinion, Sumatra is the best Indonesian restaurant. Here is the link to their website, just remember, on Saturday they are open from 5-9 pm and they are closed on Sundays. You can call ahead and ask what time they are open and drive out there to Hillsboro. It will worth your time and gas.
