Took a road trip for vacation and revisited sveral places and tried a couple new spots.

Passed through Gustine on our way south and enjoyed the new lunch menu which features freshly made sandwiches. I had turkey and my wife had grilled sausage. Both were tasty and well prepared.

Not learning from a prior experience, I returned to Villa Creek in Paso and ate from the bar menu. My wife had overpriced, average chips with guacamole to start and, the meal highlight, a wonderful spicey shrimp dish that mercifully was on their website so I never have to return. I had the burrata and hierloom tomato salad. The burrata was mutilated (never had it before but appeared to be a half or third of a whole one) and the unripe tomato could have come from Safeway in February. The shepherds plate followed and was just not very good. The winelist is very good but I have no reason to ever return.

I was up early in the AM and had a mediocre, at best, breakfast at the Cowgirl Cafe which has lousey coffee. My potatoes were cold, the bacon a day old and the toast limp but the waitress was cheerful and I loved listening to the ranchers, farmers and locals chatting at the counter. I took my wife later to Panolivo in Paso and had an excellent cup of coffee and my wife had a very good breakfast. That evening we ate at McPhee's in Templeton. My burger and fries were wonderful and all four of us enjoyed the food and wine. Ian has a very good and nicely priced wine list, too (though the lack of vintage dates on the list irritates me).

In the AM, we off to the Taco Temple in Morro Bay and the three of us who ordered fresh seafood tacos (shrimp, salmon and gigantic scallops) were very happy but my buddy who opted for the chili relleno plate was not overwhelmed. Shared a chocolate bread pudding and tres leches flan for dessert, both of which were satisfying. Remember that they are "cash only."

After the drive up 1, we had dinner in PG at Passionfish, sharing two appetizers, three salads, four seafood mains, a couple desserts and 2.5 bottles of wine for the four of us. Highlights included the crabcake appetizer, the crab and avocado salad, a bowl of fried olives used in another salad, the seafood including especially the shrimp. No duds and desserts were quite good.

Breakfast in the AM was the place across the street that I saw in someone's post, probably e.d. now Phoo D. It was as good or better than my usual stop downtown at the Old Monterey Cafe.

On the way home, we stopped at Wolfsen's in Gustine and selected four of their now over sixty house made sausages. They have two kinds of linguica. The milder flavored one is very flavorful and is probably best used as a condiment than for eating straight up.

Later in the week we road tripped to Sacramento and had lunch at the original Lemon Grass which seems to be a Thai Vietnamese kind of fusion place. Very nice decore, rather underwhelming service and three of four very pleased by our lunches, two of which were specials. I had a corn salad with lamb brochettes and loved it. I only wish the food was more designed and plated for family syle dining.
