J Dewars

Meathead | Feb 13, 2003 02:12 PM

Does anyone have more info on JDewars. I know that I can find almost any sort of game or beef at the store in Newton. What disturbs me is the prices. For example - frozen hanger steaks 7.99 and frozen flank steaks 8.99. For frozen meat that's pretty steep - especially for those cuts. In addition, it's only frozen in large sizes - 3lbs up - usually 2 per package - that's less than ideal if you are cooking less - as you thaw out the whole package.

I've been reading this page for a while and gleen that Dewars supplies meat to many restaurants and retailers in the area. I had hoped that going to the source would mean cheaper prices - alas I was wrong.

I was also wondering if anyone knows where they butcher their beef and if their beef is dry-aged or Angus, etc... There is no mention of the grade - although the price would imply prime. The location is far to small to have aging facilities and frankly their walk in fridge looks to small to hang more than a few sides of beef.

I will continue shopping at Dewars and recommend it for anyone seeking gamebirds, game, fois grois, etc. but I would love to hear from anyone who knows more details about Dewars operation.
