You decide for various reasons to have a meal at your home; birthdays, holidays, life cycle events, reunions of friends old and new, a house warming , so you invite guests to your home to celebrate. You send paper or digital invitations and you ask for a response by a certain date, so that you can plan, shop, prepare and serve a sit down or buffet meal.
Some people "follow proper protocol", some don't , some are maybes and some say yes and are no shows..
