What's the Deal with Madras Mahal?

Three of us had a horrible meal there tonight. With the exception of a properly executed onion rava dosai, everything we ate was without soul, and heavy-handed. The plain dosa and onion and pepper uttapham were both heavy, overly thick, and in the case of the uttapham, gummy in consistency. The sambar was wan. The coconut chutney was watery.

The curries were worse, a total disaster. Perhaps it was a mistake to order one Gujarati curry, but the others were no better -- anything that included tomatoes turned to the Indian equivalent of jarred Ragu.

I know this restaurant has fans here. Was this an aberration, has the place gone downhill, or we were just unlucky?
