Happy 100th birthday, See's Candies!

This is an especially happy occasion coming so soon after many of us feared that it would be a victim of the pandemic. Fortunately, See's adapted and has reopened successfully. https://www.chowhound.com/post/sees-c...

One of the hallmarks of my being a native Californian is the ability to identify nearly every type of See's Candy by the shape and swirled markings in the chocolate enrobingertu, a skill that "glbtrtr" says she is proud of as well. https://www.chowhound.com/post/sees-c... Among my many favorites is the Scotchmallow. For November's centennial candy, See's released a coffee version, available in milk or dark chocolate, and I was lucky to be gifted a pound box.

As I was about to bite into the first one, I was warned by the giver that the caffeine content seemed to be very high, causing him some jitters. I don't know if it was the power of suggestion or a real effect, but I could feel my heart rate climbing after a few minutes and it did keep me alert for the long drive home. So I've been limiting myself to no more than one per day.

That is not easy though, as the Dark Coffee Scotchmallows are really good if you love the taste of coffee. The coffee element is quite intense and persists as a long-lasting aftertaste. Coffee weaves so beautifully with the dark Guittard chocolate couverture and the fluffy marshmallow. The caramel component seems a little silkier and not as chewy as the regular scotchmallow, giving this special edition a bit more sophisticated personality.

I'll be sad when they're done, never to be seen again.
