How to be a culinarily adventurous...without knowing the cultures?

An amazing asian grocery store recently opened here in my neighborhood in Boston.. For Boston Chowhounds, its Super88 in Brighton, MA I'm not asian.. I Don't know Chineese, Japaneese, Vietnameese or Thai... but I enjoy so many of the cuisines. The other factor in the equation to just trying random things is that I'm a vegetarian -- so many foods have dried shrimp, fish sauces, squid etc...How can I experiment without really knowing what is in many of the sauces and frozen foods? Some of the food items don't have English writing...For example The Mushroom isle...hundreds of types of mushrooms! What do people cook with these mushrooms? I like tofu -- but I see 10 types of firm tofu on the shelf... I feel stupid asking such a broad, and potential offensive question. But I am honestly so impressed by this grocery store -- that I want to learn more!
