having just received my copy of Jim Leff's Eclectic Gourmet Guide to NYC, a friend and I ventured to Cuchifritos in Spanish Harlem (116th btw lex and 3rd). so here's the report. to start, we got two snacks: an alcapurria (plantain stuffed with ground beef) and a papa rellena (potato stuffed with ground beef) and they were both really tasty ($1.10 for each)I got the chicharrones de pollo (simple sauteed chicken pieces but really flavorful and juicy) which came with probably the best platanos (sweet) I've ever had. my friend had the mofongo (mashed plantains with pork and garlic) which was pretty good by itself but even better doctored up with some mojo (garlic sauce) and hot sauce. finally, got an ajonjilo (sesame drink). I couldn't really taste any sesame but it tasted damn good.
for dessert (after walking it off for an hour), we went to martha frances and claimed my friend's free 9" cheesecake from the chowhound social raffle. feeds 16. costs $45 (it was good but not $45 good) a nice chowhoundy day all in all.
