Always frustrated by the lack a good cafes in my area of Montgomery County, I was pleasantly suprised by a first visit to Cravings Cafe this weekend.
The cafe, located behind Assi Market, is BYO and was able to easily accommodate us at 9PM on Saturday night.
Their menu is huge and a little daunting. And although, I found plenty of items that were soooo 2001 (vanilla-infused poached lobster, etc), they still had many offerings that appealed, especially on their daily and seasonal menu specials. My husband and I both enjoyed our selections of fresh-baked bread (not sure if it was baked in-house), a slice of sunflower seed loaf and an onion tart.
A starter of chilled red plum soup with creme fraiche was excellent-- tart, slightly savory. For an entree I selected a daily special, Hawaiian butterfish in a lemon-chive buerre blanc, served atop arugula and barley and thick slices of heirloom tomatoes drizzled with aged balsamic. It was a perfect choice at $18.95. My husband went for a heavier choice, the Cognac Combo-- shrimp and filet medallions in an excellent cognac cream sauce, served with grilled asparagus.
We were a tad too full for dessert. Most of their desserts are outsourced from Brothers, but they offered a homemade honey saffron creme brulee that I wish I had room for, as well as a bread pudding of the day.
The service was prompt and pleasant, but the place was not very busy on this trip.
It is definitely somewhere I will try again.
