Nothing new or different about posting a positive review on this place. It's gotten a lot of love on Chowhound and elsewhere since opening a few years ago. But I had a small, family Xmas Eve dinner there last night, and was reminded again of how many things they do well.
For me its a given that their steak quality is 2nd to none in SD. The accompaniments available with any steak include standard issue stuff like sauteed onions or mushrooms. But you can also get a side of bone marrow served in a large beef shank bone cut lengthwise; or a piece of sauteed foie gras atop or on the side of your steak. While these items cost a little extra, the wonderful bordelaise sauce, mashed potato and veggies that come with each steak do not.
I love the music here. Soft, old time western songs (NOT "country western") from Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, et al, complement the dude ranch motif perfectly. Last night there was even some 40's big band fare.
Specialty cocktails are inventive and relatively inexpensive compared with other steak places, as are standard drinks, even with premium call brands.
Service was a little hit and miss for me in the first year or so, but now it is seamless and quite pleasant.
I always bring in a bottle of wine and there's never a hint of surprise or attitude. Just a prompt glance of the label to see what it is so the proper stemware can come out, and a query of whether I'd like it decanted. No "well you realize there's a corkage fee to open this" which I get at some other places. (Corkage is $20, and if I had any quibbles, it would be to waive that when the table orders drinks or additional wine from their list)
Big fan of this spot as you can tell.
