COSETTE..EAST 33rd Street..very brief report

Four of us ate here last night......this is a very small and somewhat crowded (small tables/hard chairs) place with an excellent, unpretentious ambience ...only a few tables, many of them occupied by French-speaking diners. The menu is pretty classic bistro....starters include onion soup; mixed green salad; pissaladiere (spelling???); mussels....... and so on. Excellent first course was an endive/green apple/blue cheese salad.....really good.... large portion. Of the entrees the clear winner was the lamb shank special served with braised cabbage. Unfortunately I ordered the calves liver, served with rattatouille and potatoes, which was mundane. Partner had the cassoulet..good but I would suggest sticking with the specials...lamb shank is apparently on offer most nights of the week. Terrific home cooking there. Wine list fairly priced..glasses on offer for $5.00to $6.00..very decent. Lots of bottles for less than $50..markup is about 50% on bottles. Not a place I would go out of my way for but a warm and cozy spot with decent food all the same. And they honor I Dine...
