The Corner House | Soledad - Salinas Valley

Melanie Wong | Jun 5, 201712:08 AM     1

A month ago I had a chance to stop at The Corner House in Soledad for lunch on my way back from King City. This spot used to be Frankie's Grill but it closed about three years ago due to divorce I'm told. It was great news when The Corner House opened with the same menu by one of the original owners.

Frankie's was renowned for big handmade flour tortillas, and they are the same at The Corner House. Stretchy, elastic, chewy, just plain marvelous. They're served on the side with many of the Mexican dishes and can be requested for tacos. I have to admit that they are better than Gloria's or El Charrito in Salinas. Don't miss them.

I ordered the chile relleno. Delicious saucing and the chile had texture and some kick to it. However, the cheese filling was barely warm inside, and I suspected these are made in advance and reheated. Also, I would prefer the souffleed type of egg batter rather than the thin layer here. Rice was pretty good with separate grain, but the beans were bland. The tortillas saved this from being just an average plate.

Chips and salsa are complimentary, and the roasted chile salsa with plenty of fire and smoky overtones seemed more powerful and better than I recall Frankie's house salsa.
