Cooking Cockles

They had New Zealand cockles at Costco so I bought a bag--5 lbs. They look like small clams to me so plan to cook them like i would little necks--white wine, garlic, onion, olive oil, little butter--served in bowls with some nice crunchy bread. Is there anything different about cockles that I should know?
