The way the cookie is crumbling in Asheville

There is a tiny store-front on Walnut Street in downtown Asheville, right around the corner from Hearn's Bicycle Shop and The Mellow Mushroom. It's easy to miss, but worth seeking out. The store is Sugar Momma's, and they are in the homemade cookie delivery business. That's right, if you're at the office, and you absolutely need to have a dozen hot chocolate chip cookies, they can hook you up. They'll bake them to order, put them in a pizza box, put the box in one of those pizza insulators, and hustle over, all before you've had time to roll up your sleeves and pour a glass of milk. You can also stop by the store and get your cookie fix. They have seating for about a dozen cookiephiles. (You can also get ice cream, courtesy of Ultimate, or bubble tea, coffee, etc.). It is my understanding that if they don't have the cookie you want on display, they'll pop the dough right into the oven for you. You can rest assured that what is on display was baked, from scratch, that day.

Yesterday, to celebrate the Hot Chocolate 10K, I stopped by for a sugar cookie. If you can make a decent sugar cookie, you can make any cookie well. Their sugar cookie could be the breed standard. It's as fat as a scone, slightly crisp around the edges, but soft, moist, and slightly crumbly inside. Mine had a warm center. As my first dessert unit of 2008, it more than justified its selection. Look out oatmeal raisin. You're next.
