I bought a can of coconut milk (cream, they call it) from trader Joe's a few days ago. Well within its "best by" date. I opened it and it smelled bad, almost a bit like cat food? But I'm also very sensitive to smells. I ended up using it in my banana bread (which no one has eaten yet), but now am second guessing.
I would have just thrown it out right away, however I bought a can of the same thing, same brand about 6 months ago and it smelled exactly the same (I threw that one right out). It seemed unlikely that I would get two cans 6 months apart that smelled exactly the same, but now I'm apprehensive. Those are the only two times I've ever used canned coconut milk, so I figured before i toss the loaf, I'd check and see if anyone knew if this was typical (again, my nose is a little weird, so it probably wouldn't smell nearly so strange to most, but still didn't smell much like coconut to me).
