Club Tropical review

Joe MacBu | Jun 17, 200502:28 AM

I went to Club Tropical tonight [Thursday] for the weekly Cryptonight Jazz event. I left having a very nice Salvadoran meal and enjoying some decent avant garde jazz.

My friend and I shared a salpico entree and a pupusa revuelta with pork, cheese and beans. The pupusa was excellent, but could have been served with a spicier salsa. But it was perfectly grilled, with an etheresque gooey filling. Smaller and less dense than those I've had on the East side, but I can't complain for $2.

The salpico (minced beef with mint, radishes and lime) was refreshing, but I had to squirt on a bit more lime to bring out more flavor. The sides includes a "Salvadoran rice" which could have almost been Uncle Ben's mixed with grated carrots. But somehow it melded well with the inexplicably delicious mashed black beans. Also included were some of the most perfect plantains I've had recently.

And let's not forget about the tortillas. Oh the tortillas! A 4 x 1/4" disk of smoky masa heaven. Perfectly grilled outer; an almost creamy inner.

Entrees run about $9. The jazz on Thursdays at 8pm will cost you an extra $10 [$5 if you're a student]. I think they have salsa dancing some nights as well.
